Best ways to disinfect pool water

Disinfection is one of the most important topics in swimming pool water treatment. Pool water contains microorganisms and unwanted substances, such as swimmers’ excretion products, skin tissue, bacteria from saliva, cosmetics etc. Those pollutants contain bacteria or lead to bacteria growth, which may cause infection to swimmers. There’re many ways to keep the pool water hygienic and healthy. Here’re some tips.

1.Chlorine Sanitizing

It is the most traditional and common approach. Chlorine, once added into water, it turns into hypochlorous acid, which attaches to the bacteria, enters into its cells and destroys the enzyme. Thus the bacteria is killed. Although the strong smell of chlorine is irritating to eyes and respiratory tract and continuous dosage may cause corrosion to the pool structure, pipelines and equipment, chlorine sanitizing is still popular among pool owners and maintainers as it is effective, economic and easy to use.

2.Ozone Generator

While chlorine is still the primary method to keep pool water from bacteria and algae, ozone generators are gradually known by more pool owners. Many of them have installed it in addition to chlorine dosing.  A pool ozone generator can reduce the amount of chlorine that pools use from 60% to 90%. That means less red eyes, less irritated skin, and less of what many call “swimmer's asthma”, which results from breathing in chlorine fumes while swimming. How Does A Pool Ozone Generator Work? Ozone, otherwise known as O3, is an unstable chemical made up of 3 oxygen molecules. It attempts to stabilize by attaching itself to other particles in the water and in air and when it does, it oxidizes them. Oxidation kills most types of bacteria. When ozone is introduced to the pool, it reverts back to O2 within about 20 seconds, so it's something that has to be continuously generated and introduced into the water for it to be effective.

3.UV Sterilizer

The UV sterilizer contains one or more high output ultraviolet bulbs, which emits particular UV light ray that is harmful. When organisms such as bacteria, parasites and algae cells are exposed to the light ray, their DNA is damaged, ultimately causing harm and death to the organisms. It is efficient in any water temperature, ease of use and generates no harmful smell or side effects, can reduce the amount of chlorine use from 50% to 90%. The UV sterilizer, however, works only on water that flow through its chamber. No disinfectants keep working on water returning to the pool. The UV bulb is a consumable part and requires regular cleaning and replacement.

4.Salt Chlorine Generator

Salt chlorine generator electrolyzes salt water (3000~6000ppm concentration) to create large quantity free chlorine and certain amount of reactive oxygen species (ROS), both of which are very active disinfectants. They oxidize and kill bacteria, viruses, algae and other organic pollutants.  When the free chlorine has performed its function as a disinfecting agent, it turns back to chlorine compound, which will be electrolyzed into free chlorine again. This process continues with the filtration cycle. Compared to traditional chlorine sanitizing, the salt chlorine generator is more intelligent, effective and reliable.

If you want to add a waterfall to your existing pool but don’t expect big renovation, stainless steel water spillway is your best choice. Not like sheer descent that is always installed on walls, the water spillway can be installed by any pool side, the only change you need to do to your pool is adding one water inlet for the spillway. When the water supply is strong enough, it may work as pool massage jet as well.

Pool flower or waterfall fountain nozzle

This is definitely the simplest and quickest way to make your pool fun and appealing. The nozzles can be fixed to the pool inlets in a minute. No pipeline or concrete work is required at all. The water is sprayed into flower or waterfall shape in the air and falls back to the pool, just like a mini water park. It also reduces pool surrounding temperature in summer.

Deck jet

This type of water feature is installed into pool decking and shoots a narrow, arching stream of water into the pool. Many Hengbo fountain nozzles can be used as deck jet in a pool.
